Layton STUDENTS GET TO PARTICIPATE IN DAVIS BOOK BATTLES. THIS IS REWARDING AND FUN EVENT FOR OUR STUDENTS, CENTERED AROUND READING.
Here are a few facts about Book Battles:
- It is a reading incentive program and competition.
- For 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th graders at Layton
- Students read from a list of fifteen books.
- Competition is based on knowledge of the books.
- There are monthly meeting on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:15 beginning in October until battle week in March.

- Jan. 11, 2023 (Wednesday @ 3:30 to 4:15)
- Feb. 10, 2023
- Battle Week; Mar 6-10, 2023
- Students on a Battle Team earn individual buttons for each book they read.
- Teams will compete in a round robin tournament during battle week.
- The winning team will represent Layton at Districts on Mar. 24, 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How many books will I need to read?
A: Any Battle Book you read you will earn a Battle pin. Students on a Battle Book Team will get a pin and lanyard, you need to work with your Battle Team to decide which books you need to be the expert on to be ready to Book Battle.
Q: Where can I find the books?
A: We have extra copies of all the titles in the Layton Elementary Library. Also most of the titles can be found in both the eBook and audio format on Sora.
Q: I’m not a very fast reader. Can I be on a team?
A: You bet! The lists have books for all reading abilities. You can, and should, begin reading now. You may have members of your team who can read some of the longer books. Being an expert on just a few of the titles will be a big service to your team.
Q: Can I read all fifteen books on my list?
A: Yes, yes, yes! There will be buttons given for each book read for your lanyard. And a special button for any battler who reads all fifteen books. You will also make the hall of fame.
Q: What if I’ve read some of these books already?
A: You will need to fill out a simple review sheet for each book in order to receive the button. If you remember the book well enough to fill out the form it will count. If you don’t remember enough of the book to do this, it might be time to read it again.
Q: Can I read some of the more challenging books with my parents or an older sibling?
A: Please do. Reading together as a family is one of the best things you can do for your education. As long as you can remember what happened in the book it won’t matter if you had help with the reading.
Q: Do audio books count?
A: Absolutely. We have most of the titles available to us on Sora.
