This past spring, a special moment unfolded at Layton High School. Spencer, a bright and energetic student at the school, had a long-awaited dream come true when he finally met his favorite bus driver, Shelly Hadlock, after months of excitement and anticipation.
Spencer is well-known for his infectious energy and positivity. Every day during lunch, he can be found helping clean up the cafeteria and sweeping the floor with a big smile. But there’s one thing Spencer is especially passionate about: his fondness for Shelly, his former bus driver when he attended Shoreline Junior High.
Spencer’s enthusiasm grew each day as he eagerly announced his plan to meet Shelly on Thursday, April 25, 2025. With each announcement, he would high-five the school’s administrators, radiating pure joy.
“Spencer was so excited about his meeting with Shelly that he couldn’t help but tell everyone about it,” said Angela Stewart, assistant principal at Layton High. “He made sure I added the date to my calendar and even checked in regularly to make sure I wouldn’t forget. His energy was contagious!”
For weeks, Spencer kept his promise to the administration, enthusiastically reminding everyone of his upcoming meeting. The administration team was so inspired by Spencer’s dedication and excitement that they started to ask more about Shelly and the importance of this meeting. Angela Stewart, knowing just how much it meant to Spencer, took action to make sure everything was set up for this heartwarming event.
“I knew I had to make this happen for Spencer,” Stewart explained. “After speaking with Shelly, we confirmed the date. When I told Spencer the news, he was over the moon. It was such a heartwarming moment to see his face light up with joy.”
The day of the meeting finally arrived, and Spencer was beyond thrilled. He eagerly ran ahead, practically skipping with joy, as he led Stewart toward Shelly’s bus. As soon as Spencer saw Shelly, he couldn’t contain his excitement. He was beaming with joy and pulling out papers and drawings he had made for her. Shelly welcomed Spencer with open arms, and the two shared a warm conversation.
“This is the best day ever!” Spencer exclaimed.
To make the moment even more special, Shelly gave Spencer a basket filled with treats and two toy buses—one with her bus number, 2016, and another with Spencer’s other favorite bus driver’s number.
“Shelly’s kindness and the connection she shares with Spencer exemplifies the heart of what we do,” said Stewart. “It’s not just about getting kids to school—it’s about making them feel valued and special. We’re so grateful to Shelly and all of our bus drivers for the love and dedication they show to our students every day.”
